With a slew of different schools and teachers offering their services, how to do you find a tutor that would suit your child? After experiencing and knowing so many educators over the years, here are some qualities of a tutor that you may find useful. We call this the R.E.A.P checklist:
R – Resilience – A good teacher should be able to have the flexibility in teaching style to help the student learn, and also the stamina to journey with the student on difficult topics until he or she catches it. At the end of the day, the reality is that 90% of the improvement has to come from the student’s personal practice, but a good teacher sets up their student for success.
E – Excellence– A good teacher should be able to come to class prepared, well-versed in their material, and with a structured lesson plan. As these classes are typically limited to once a week sessions, you want to find a teacher practices excellence so that the lessons are impactful and effective.
A – Ability to inspire – A teacher that has this ability inspires the student to go beyond just the grind of learning, and triggers the desire from the student to want to study to get better at their subject. Teaching qualification does not necessarily equate to teaching quality, so it is important to find a teacher that can connect and transfer his or her knowledge to the student. When this happens, success breeds success, and the confidence gained by the student has the potential to extend beyond the borders of the subject alone.
P – Passion – This is the “must have” characteristic of the teacher, the “what makes you get out bed?” question. A good teacher must not only have the ability to teach, but more importantly, the heart to teach. This will be a key driver for the above qualities.
It is important to take your time in selecting the right place for your child, rather than “where are his/her friends going to?” or equating reputation, cost or popularity to effectiveness. Ultimately on this learning journey, you would want to go to someone that you can trust. We are cheering you on!
